Excision may refer to the removal of foreign or abnormal internal growth from underneath the skin. This procedure is recommended for problems such as growth of small cancers, atypical moles, and cysts that are enlarged.
The growth or the mass is injected with anesthesia to numb the area. Then the surgeon painlessly removes the mass and a thin rim of the normal-appearing tissue. The tissue removed is then sent to a laboratory for analysis and final diagnosis. This procedure would typically run for about 1 to 2 weeks from tissue removal to final diagnosis.
